Mt Hutt


Mt Hutt       Winter wonderland! 

Located in the Southern Alps at 2086m above sea level with breathtaking views over the Canterbury Plains to the Pacific Ocean in one direction and the never-ending peaks of the Southern Alps in the other

The season typically opens early June and frequently lasts till mid October.  At 683m the vertical drop is one of the highest of any ski area in the South Island.

Skiing at Mt Hutt offers an amazing variety of terrain with extreme skiers heading for the steeper challenges of the double black diamond runs of the South Face, strong skiers taking on the Rakaia Chutes while the novices can enjoy the wide open trails within the basin.
Try Snowboarding on some of the best snow in Australasia, with a wide choice of runs depending on your capabilities. Excellent facilities including the Dirty Dog half-pipe, a massive snowboard terrain park and an award-winning snow sport school to name but a few.
Mt Somers High Country

Winter views of Mt Somers High Country are unbelievable.  See these snow covered mountains and shimmering lakes by 4WD or scenic flights.

Heli skiing
There are breathtaking Heliski flights to a huge choice of slopes in the Black Hills or Taylor Range. Half and full day options are available. Have lunch with the Alps as your backdrop. Another popular option is accessed from Mt Hutt Ski Area and offers 800 vertical metres of skiing on the North Peak Run
Ski club fields
There are trips to the Canterbury Club fields of Mt Olympus, Mt Cheeseman, Broken River, Craigeburn or Temple Basin with door to door transportation and lunch included.
Try Ice skating at Staveley on a natural outdoor rink surrounded by native beech forest.

Scenic 4WD trips to the real Middle Earth where Lord of the Rings was filmed or further into the Back Country by mountain transport for skiing.

Take a Helicopter flight over  breathtaking views of the Southern Alps and Canterbury Plains, maybe even picnic on a remote snow-capped mountain or by an alpine lake.


Apart from all the great skiing and snowboarding there is still Skydiving, Bungy Jumping, Golf, Horse- trekking and Hot Air Ballooning available during the winter season so there is plenty to fill your holiday.
